Why we built Thrifty Owl
Microsoft Money was discontinued in 2009. For over a decade, millions of users — loyal customers who had built years of financial history in the software — were left without a comparable replacement. Most of the alternatives were either oversimplified mobile apps, subscription-heavy services that treated your data as their product, or American-focused tools that didn't understand UK banking.
Thrifty Owl started as a personal project to scratch an itch. The goal was simple: rebuild what made Microsoft Money great — detailed transaction tracking, multi-account management, budgeting, bills, and reports — and bring it into the modern web era. Cloud-synced, device-agnostic, and private by design.
We're currently in early access. The core features are live and actively used. We're growing, listening to feedback, and building toward a full v1.0 release. If you've been searching for a Microsoft Money replacement, you've found it.
