Terms of Service

Plain-English terms for using Thrifty Owl. We believe legal documents should be readable.

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Thrifty Owl web application and related services ("Service") operated by Thrifty Owl ("we", "us", "our"). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms.

1. Using Thrifty Owl

Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use Thrifty Owl. By using the Service, you confirm that you meet this requirement.

Your account

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your login credentials and for all activity under your account. Notify us immediately at info [at] thriftyowl [dot] money if you suspect unauthorised access.

You agree not to:

Photos and uploaded content

Features such as Home Inventory let you upload photos. You agree not to upload any content that is illegal, including images depicting child sexual abuse or exploitation. Every photo you upload is automatically scanned by an automated content-moderation service before it is stored; images flagged as violating this policy are rejected and are not retained. We reserve the right to remove any content, suspend or terminate accounts, and — where we are legally required to, or where content is identified as apparent child sexual abuse material — report it and any associated account information to the relevant authorities (including the Internet Watch Foundation and/or National Center for Missing & Exploited Children) and law enforcement.

Feedback

If you send us ideas, suggestions, or feedback about the Service — including through an in-app feedback feature — you grant us a perpetual, royalty-free licence to use that feedback to develop and improve Thrifty Owl, without any obligation to compensate you or attribute it to you.

2. Your data

You own your data. By using the Service, you grant us a limited licence to store and process your data solely to provide the Service to you. We do not claim ownership of your financial data and will never use it for advertising or sell it to third parties.

3. Our intellectual property

Thrifty Owl, our logo, and the Service's software, design, and content (excluding your own data) are owned by us or our licensors and protected by copyright, trade mark, and other intellectual property laws. Except as needed to use the Service for its intended purpose, you may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, or create derivative works based on any part of the Service, or use our name or branding, without our written consent.

4. Free and Pro plans

The Free plan is available at no cost with the features described on our Pricing page. We reserve the right to adjust the features included in each tier with reasonable notice to users.

Pro subscriptions are billed annually via Stripe. You may cancel at any time; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. Payments are non-refundable.

To keep a Free account active, we ask that you log in at least once every six months. If six months pass without a login, we'll email you a warning. If a further 30 days go by with no login after that warning, your account and all data associated with it will be permanently deleted. Logging in at any point resets this clock. This policy does not apply to Pro accounts.

5. Availability and changes

We aim for high availability but do not guarantee uninterrupted access. Access to the Service may be interrupted from time to time for maintenance, updates, or reasons beyond our reasonable control. We may modify, suspend, or discontinue features of the Service with reasonable notice. We will give at least 90 days' notice before any significant change affecting data portability.

6. Disclaimers

Thrifty Owl is a personal finance tracking tool. It does not provide financial, investment, tax, or legal advice, and is not a substitute for advice from a qualified professional. Any decisions you make based on information displayed in Thrifty Owl are your own responsibility. We are not liable for financial losses arising from your use of the Service.

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of satisfactory quality, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement, to the extent permitted by law. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that figures it displays (such as balances, forecasts, or categorisations) will always be accurate or complete — always verify important figures against your bank or provider's own records.

7. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Thrifty Owl shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages — including loss of profits, revenue, business, or data — arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability to you shall not exceed the amount you have paid us in the 12 months preceding the event giving rise to the claim.

Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for any other liability that cannot be limited or excluded under applicable law.

8. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from any third-party claims, damages, losses, and reasonable legal costs arising directly from: your breach of these Terms, your unlawful use of the Service, or content you upload that infringes another person's rights. This does not apply to the extent a claim arises from our own negligence, breach of these Terms, or wilful misconduct, or where excluding your liability would be unlawful.

9. Termination

You may delete your account at any time from your account settings. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms. Upon termination, your data will be deleted within 30 days per our Privacy Policy.

To delete your account: click your profile icon, select Personal data, then choose Delete account. If your account has a password, you'll be asked to confirm it before the deletion is carried out. This action is permanent and immediately removes all your accounts, transactions, budgets, and settings — it cannot be undone.

10. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales. Nothing in these Terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer.

11. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by email at least 30 days before they take effect. Continued use of the Service after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
